Most of the time, grinding is the right call. It's faster, less disruptive to the surrounding yard, and gets rid of the visible stump so you can plant grass or mulch right over it.

Grinding usually fits when:

What Happens to the Wood Chips

North Carolina law requires anyone digging, including stump removal work that disturbs the ground, to contact NC811 before starting. We handle this step ourselves before every job that involves digging near your property, giving utility companies time to mark buried lines so nobody hits a gas, water, or power line by accident. This is standard practice, not an extra step we skip to save time.

Will the Stump Grow Back?

Grinding removes the visible stump but leaves the root system in the ground, which can occasionally send up small shoots, especially with certain species known for suckering, like some maples and elms. These sprouts are usually easy to manage with routine yard maintenance and typically fade out over a season or two as the root system breaks down naturally.

If regrowth is a real concern for your particular tree species, full removal eliminates the root system entirely and avoids this altogether.

Why DIY Stump Grinding Is Risky

Rental stump grinders are common enough that a lot of homeowners consider doing this themselves, but it's riskier than it looks. These machines can kick back debris at high speed, and without experience, it's easy to misjudge how a grinder handles root systems, especially compacted or angled ones. Hitting a buried utility line without a proper 811 check beforehand is also a real risk with equipment that powerful.

If you're set on doing it yourself, at minimum get the utility check done first and wear proper eye and ear protection.

Stump Grinding Cost

Stump grinding typically costs somewhere between $50 for a small stump and $500 or more for a large one. A few things drive the price within that range: bigger stumps take longer to grind through, older/more decayed stumps are usually quicker than fresh ones since the wood has softened, hardwood species take longer than softwoods like pine, and hard-to-reach stumps tucked behind fencing or close to structures can also add to the cost.
